Being Counted: Canada's first race-based audience survey signals market opportunities and data collection gaps (3:00pm - 3:45pm)

In Partnership With

Alberta

PARTNER PRESENTATION: The research that drives decisions about Canada’s screen content has never adequately represented the views of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour audiences. Race-based audience data is completely absent from most research to date and because of this, the viewing habits and preferences of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour audiences are masked within the “general population” data, rendering close to one-quarter of Canadian audiences invisible to broadcasters.

Join us for a provocative and illuminating panel discussion of the Black Screen Office’s ground-breaking Being Counted: Canadian Race-Based Audience Survey results. The report establishes a foundation upon which to challenge the assumptions made by Canadian screen industry producers and creatives about what should be on screen. It invites a new conversation about which stories should be told, how, and by whom. These insights also create new possibilities for accountability when it comes to sustained industry change.
