Tiffany Hsiung is a Peabody award-winning filmmaker based in Toronto, Canada and is listed as one of DOC NYC’s 40 under 40.

She is a two-time Canadian Screen Award winner; her recent win was for her film ‘Sing Me a Lullaby’ (2020) which also won the Oscar-qualifying Grand Jury Prize at DOC NYC and inaugural Toronto International Film Festival ‘Share Her Journey Short Cuts Award’ during the world premiere at TIFF. ‘Sing Me a Lullaby’ went on to winning The Directors Guild of Canada Best Short Film Award, Guangzhou International Documentary Festival Best International Short, Top two prize at the annual WIFT- Showcase and listed as one of TIFF Canada’s Top Ten of 2020.

In 2018 Tiffany received the prestigious Peabody award for her debut feature ‘The Apology’ (2016) (Produced by the National
Film Board of Canada) along with the DuPont Columbia Award presented by CNN's Christiane Amanpour, the Allan King Memorial Award and over 15 international awards that include Best World Documentary at The Busan International Film Festival (Asia’s largest film festival) after an astounding world premiere at Hot Docs International Documentary Festival.

Hsiung’s work has screened all around the world and theatrically released and distributed in Canada, US, Korea and China. Her films have been internationally broadcasted by PBS/POV and Worldwide by Al Jazeera and partnered with The New Yorker.

Harnessing her passion for both fiction and non-fiction storytelling. Hsiung was commissioned to make ‘The Bassinet’ (2019) a hybrid short for the National Film Board of Canada and co-created the award winning digital interactive documentary ‘The Space We Hold’ (2017) which took home a Canadian Screen Award and a Peabody Futures of Media Award for best interactive documentary and nominated for a Webby Award. Hsiung directed her first episodic show for the Emmy award winning Sinking Ship Entertainment, ‘Dino Dana’ (2018) and an episode for their new YouTube original production web series ‘Lockdown’ (2020) Hsiung has just released another film commissioned by CBC ‘Until Further Notice’ (2021) filmed throughout the first lockdown in Ontario, Canada and now released and distributed by Conde Nast and The New Yorker. Hsiung was selected out of 350 applicants across Canada to be one of 8 directors to participate in the renowned Academy Women Directors’ Program. Partnered with Netflix in 2019 and invited for 2 blocks of season 4 of ‘Kim’s Convenience’ and the season finale of ‘Frankie Drake Mysteries’ as a director observer.

As a graduate of Ryerson University film studies production, Hsiung was the recipient of the Norman Jewison Award and William F. Whites Award for her award-winning short narrative film ‘Binding Borders’ (2007) that screened internationally around the world and propelled her to direct the RCI/CBC six-part mini-series on China’s first ever Olympic Games, ‘A New Face for Beijing’ (2008).

Hsiung is currently in development for her feature drama based on her award-winning short film ‘Sing Me a Lullaby’. Hsiung’s approach to storytelling is driven by the human condition and the relationship that is built with the people she meets both in front and behind the lens. Despite how emotionally charged her films are, Hsiung’s cinematic stories masterfully embeds humor and levity to bring her audience in closer, allowing her films to be universally accessible and relevant.

Hsiung currently sits on the board of DOC Canada Ontario chapter and was elected as second vice-chair of the Directors Guild of Canada Ontario Executive Board in 2020 and recently invited to be part of the HOT DOCS Executive Board. Hsiung is also a member of the National BIPOC committee for the Directors Guild of Canada.
